Suzie Cheikho was sacked after her boss monitored how much work she does.
Suzie Cheikho, who gained widespread attention last year after her employer monitored her work activity using keystroke technology while she worked from home, now fears she may never be able to find another job.
Cheikho was dismissed from her role at Insurance Australia Group (IAG) in February 2023, after 18 years with the company.
She attempted to file a claim for unfair dismissal, but her efforts were unsuccessful.
In August 2023, it was determined that IAG had a “valid reason of misconduct” for her termination.
The Fair Work Commission (FWC) in Australia found that Cheikho had missed deadlines, skipped meetings, and was difficult to contact. Furthermore, her failure to complete a specific task led to a fine for her employer.
Cheikho had also received a warning in November 2022, just a few months prior to her dismissal.
So, how did the company assess Cheikho’s productivity while working from home?
The company tracked her work activity over 49 days, from October to December 2022, using keystroke technology. On average, she pressed her keyboard 54 times per hour during the monitoring period.
After her story gained significant attention, Cheikho expressed her concerns about her future job prospects in an interview with MailOnline.
“It’s embarrassing that this story has gone viralโnobody is going to hire me,” Cheikho admitted.
“After 18 years with the company, I only ever received one warning.”
When questioned about the accuracy of the work activity recorded during her time working from home, Cheikho expressed doubt about the keystroke technology’s data, telling her managers that she had “never not worked.”
Since the incident became public last year, Cheikho shared that she had been experiencing harassment.
“This has never happened to me before, and for what?” she lamented in a now-deleted TikTok video.
“It’s something very emotional and very private; I never talked about it on social media.”
“I’m literally getting harassed through Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok. What do you want me to do? I can’t get a f**king job.”
