In February, a group of college students made an unexpected discovery after purchasing a secondhand couch from a Salvation Army store. The friends, who were studying at SUNY New Paltz and Mount Holyoke College, brought the couch back to their dorm room. After watching a movie, they made a shocking find that would leave them in disbeliefโ$41,000 hidden inside the cushions. What followed was a remarkable story of honesty and integrity.
One evening, as the students settled into their dorm, they noticed strange crinkles in the built-in pillows of their newly purchased couch. Driven by curiosity, they decided to investigate, and to their astonishment, discovered bubble wrap envelopes tucked away inside. As they pulled out envelope after envelope, they were stunned to find $41,000 in cash.
โWe couldnโt believe it,โ said Werkhoven, a geology major. As the money piled up, thoughts of new cars and other tempting dreams crossed their minds. But when they noticed one envelope with a womanโs name on it, reality set in. Guasti, a Mount Holyoke College graduate, reflected, “The excitement quickly faded. We didnโt earn that money.” The discovery led them to a moral dilemma that would ultimately guide their decision.
Determined to do the right thing, the students reached out to their parents for guidance. Their search ultimately led them to an elderly woman, whose story added an emotional depth to their discovery. The woman, who requested to remain anonymous, shared that her late husband had hidden their savings in the couch for her security. After a recent surgery, her children unknowingly donated the couch, replacing it to accommodate her recovery needs.
Grateful for the students’ honesty, the woman and her family expressed their heartfelt thanks as the students returned the $41,000. “We almost didnโt pick that couch,” Russo admitted. “It smelled and looked ugly, but it was the only one that fit our dorm.” The story became a powerful reminder of kindness, integrity, and the unexpected ways life can come full circle.
The story culminated in a heartwarming dinner shared between the students and the woman’s family. As a token of her appreciation, the woman gifted the friends $1,000 to share.
Reflecting on the experience, Werkhoven said, “Anyone can do good if they will themselves to it.” The students showed that even when faced with temptation, integrity can prevail. Though they walked away with less money than they had discovered, they left with a story of honesty and kindnessโone that would stay with them for a lifetime.
